Carbs aren’t always the black plague of weight gain that everyone fears them to be. Some carbs are actually healthy for our digestive system while others prevent us from achieving weight loss goals.

Knowing the difference between good carbs and bad carbs can help us discriminate against the worst type of carb for weight loss goals.

First, notice how spinach and candy both fall under the label of carbs, but they’re entirely different. Without medical knowledge, we already know which of those will actually benefit our diet and which one will bring us spiraling downward after a sugar high.

The absolute worst kind of carbs that slow weight loss are “processed carbs,” says Dr. Mark Hyman, “Director of Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Functional Medicine, the Founder of The UltraWellness Center, and a ten-time #1 New York Times Bestselling author.”

Processed carbs consist of foodstuff like pasta, white bread, baked goods, candy and soda. Dr. Hyman explains that “doughnuts, breads, bagels…[are] stripped of their nutrients and fiber,” and therefore do not have a high nutritional value.

Dr. Hyman claims that “carbs are the single most important thing you can eat for health and weight loss.” It simply takes a little learning to know which carbs are the right ones to eat in order to contribute positive results to your diet, such as spinach and other leafy greens.

While all humans were created equally, not all carbs were. When planning diet and weight loss goals, remember the difference between good and bad carbs, and always confer with a doctor or nutritionist before making any drastic diet decisions.
